Growing Chestnut at Home
Chinese Hybrids are recommended to be left as multi-stem trees. Avoid training as a single stem leader. A multi-stem tree will provide a heavier crop of nuts and not get as high.
Year 7 will be a serious crop. In year 10, you can go to single stems, the crop is so heavy
Our selection here are chosen for North Carolina and nearby locations. They are all heavy producers
You can grow with tree tubes to avoid browsing from deer. Good tubes will have ventilation, otherwise the leaves can get cooked and break dormancy too early. If using tubes, periodically remove the tube to prune the tree and remove dead leaves from around the trunk. Fence cages with rebar stakes can also be used for a longer time and keep the deer off.
About Chestnut Blight and Chinese Hybrids:
Chinese hybrids have good resistant. They can still get blight, but it might just be a leader, or would not be a death sentence like it would be for a pure American chestnut genetic.
